Senior 4-H Rabbit Practice Exam

The scientific name for the domestic rabbit is Oryctolagus cuniculus. This name is derived from Latin, where "Oryctolagus" is the genus and "cuniculus" is the species. This classification places the domestic rabbit in the family Leporidae, identifying it clearly within the mammalian order Lagomorpha, distinguished by their long ears and strong hind legs.

Other options provided refer to different species. Mus musculus is the scientific name for the common house mouse, Capra aegagrus refers to the wild goat or the domestic goat, and Felis catus is the scientific name for the domestic cat. Each of these species belongs to entirely different families and genera, which underscores why Oryctolagus cuniculus is the correct choice as it specifically pertains to domestic rabbits. Understanding these classifications is important in the study of animal biology and helps in distinguishing between various species and their respective characteristics.
